Scarf, Cowl and Shawl Sizes: How Big Should It Be?
An adult scarf is typically 6 to 8 inches wide and 60 to 70 inches long — roughly the wearer's height. A cowl needs a circumference of 26 to 30 inches to pass over the head comfortably.
A triangular shawl usually runs 60 to 72 inches across the top edge.

Choosing dimensions
Length: match the wearer's height
A scarf roughly as long as the person is tall will wrap once with tails hanging comfortably. Shorter looks skimpy; much longer becomes a hazard on stairs.
Width: mind the yarn weight
Chunky yarn makes a thick fabric, so 6 inches is plenty. In fingering weight, 8 inches gives a scarf with enough presence to be worth the hours.
Cowls: measure over the head
The circumference must clear the head, not just the neck — about 26 inches minimum for an adult. A cowl that has to be forced on never gets worn.
Check as you go
Lay the work around your neck occasionally. Knitting to a number is fine; knitting to what actually looks right is better, and you can always add length.
Scarves take more yarn than people expect. An adult scarf in DK typically needs 400 to 600 yards — it's all length. Weigh your ball halfway through: if you've used more than half the yarn and knitted less than half the scarf, make it narrower or shorter now rather than at the end.
Stitch patterns that suit
Anything reversible, since both sides of a scarf show. Garter stitch, ribbing, seed stitch and most cable patterns all work. Plain stocking stitch is the one to avoid — it curls into a tube however much you block it, which is why so many first scarves end up looking like a rope.
